Methods of improving wear resistance of Automobile Gears

Traditionally, the methods to improve the wear resistance of gears are mainly to change the gear manufacturing materials or the surface wear resistance of gears through heat treatment process. The common heat treatment processes of automobile gears include carburizing quenching, carbonitriding, shot peening strengthening, laser cladding and high-frequency quenching. In recent years, in view of the failure phenomena such as wear, pitting, fatigue and broken teeth in the transmission process of automobile gears, experts, scholars and engineers at home and abroad have carried out a lot of research from the aspects of changing materials, heat treatment, surface coating, local hardening, improving manufacturing methods and optimizing gear shape, so as to improve the wear resistance and fatigue resistance of material surfaces.

At present, the common methods to improve the wear resistance of automobile gears are: changing the chemical composition and structure of materials, changing the heat treatment process, spraying surface composite coating, surface modification and strengthening, laser surface modification, surface chemical treatment, etc. The following methods and means are widely used:

Gear surface modification technology is adopted

Ultrasonic shot peening is a surface modification technology using ultrasonic High-energy Shot. The surface roughness of Ti6Al4V alloy after ultrasonic peening is 1 / 2 ~ 1 / 3 lower than that of traditional peening. After ultrasonic shot peening, the fatigue strength of hp-310 steel with ultra-high strength is increased by about 50%, which is about 17% higher than that of traditional shot peening; After ultrasonic shot peening, the bending fatigue strength of 431 martensitic stainless steel is increased by about 25%, and that of ti7al4mo alloy is increased by about 15%. The high-speed jet cavitation impact method used by Qiyu University of technology in Japan to change the surface characteristics of gears can significantly improve its wear resistance and fatigue strength.

Gear surface chemical heat treatment

Chemical heat treatment, such as surface carbonitriding and surface nitriding, makes the matrix strong and tough and makes the tooth surface wear-resistant. Although such processes can meet the performance requirements, they have long process flow, high energy consumption, high cost and environmental pollution. In addition, the carburized gear has large deformation and heavy finishing workload in the later stage; The gears treated by nitriding have spalling phenomenon in use.

Local hardening technology

Surface super hardening technology is a surface infiltration hardening technology with high wear resistance and high contact fatigue performance developed in recent years. Through this local hardening process, fine martensite structure can be formed on the gear surface to improve the hardness. The research shows that surface super hardening can increase the contact fatigue life of vascox – 2m gear steel by 30 ~ 35 times.

Improve lubrication capacity

High quality lubricating oil is used to improve the lubrication quality, such as the Middle East vehicle lubricating oil: eloc ENOC gear oil, which has the characteristics of high-pressure wear resistance and low-temperature fluidity, which can effectively protect the gear surface and prolong the service life of the gear.
