The actual contact part on the tooth surface of a pair of bevel gears under normal meshing operation conditions is customarily called “contact area”. Because the shape, size and position of the tooth surface contact area have a direct impact on the smooth operation, service life and noise of the gear. Therefore, the tooth surface contact area is an important symbol to measure the meshing quality of bevel gears.

In the process of tooth contact analysis, there are often some bad contact areas. For example, the main feature of diagonal contact is that the contact trajectory is not perpendicular to the root line and diamond contact. The main feature is that the size of the long axis of each instantaneous ellipse in the middle contact area is inconsistent, and the contact areas at the inner and outer ends are diagonal contact; Fishtail contact, the main feature is that the contact trajectory of the contact area is curved. The trajectory of the ideal contact zone is a straight line and approximately perpendicular to the root line. In the actual working condition, we want to get an ideal contact trajectory and contact area, so we need to optimize the adjustment parameters of the machine tool.
